Private jet charter and flights to Preveza
Preveza would best be described as a gateway town as it’s airport serves the nearby island of Lefkada, a vacation hotspot just half an hour away by road. However, you could base yourself here for a couple of nights to explore the local sights such as the ancient Roman city of Nikopolis, explore the charming town with its yacht-filled marina, or just relax on the wonderfully undeveloped beaches to the north. Preveza is located up in Greece’s north-west corner at the entrance to the Ionian Sea’s Ambracian Gulf, a vast wetland region lined with fauna-rich marshes. The town itself has a small old quarter with narrow streets lined with 19th-Century mansions, and cobblestone squares lined with tavernas and ouzeris. Due to Preveza’s strategic position between the waters of the gulf and the Ionian Sea, the area was heavily fortified. Today, there are a handful of these structures still standing mostly from the Ottoman period of the early 19th Century. Head northwest from the centre town and you’ll reach Kanali Beach, a largely undeveloped stretch of sand that stretches for miles.
The highlight attraction of the region is undoubtedly the ruins of Nicopolis, an ancient city founded by the great-nephew of Julius Caesar, Caeser Augustus. The ‘victory city’ was built in commemoration of the Roman statesman’s (and later emperor) conquest of Anthony and Cleopatra during a great naval battle in the Ionian Sea in 31 BC. The ruins are situated a few miles north of Preveza and there are some incredible structures that you can see here. There’s the aqueduct which was used to bring water to the town, a collection of Roman baths, the Odeon, a stadium and some wonderfully well-preserved mosaics. Nearby, there’s the Archaeological Museum of Nicopolis which showcases some of the most important finds from the site.
Most people who arrive at Preveza’s airport are bound for Lefkada, an ‘island’ that’s famous for its beaches which are considered to be the most breathtaking in the Mediterranean. The first town you’ll reach after crossing the man-made channel that separates it from the mainland is the capital, Lefkada, a typical Greek settlement with a marina, main square and plenty of shops, bars, tavernas and restaurants.
Lefkada has miles and miles of magazine cover bays which are lapped by crystal clear waters. The most famous of these is Porto Katsiki, a natural gem that attracts thousands of visitors every year. They come for the Instagram-worthy cliff-meets-turquoise water views and to cool off in the refreshing (but often quite wavy) Ionian Sea. During the high summer months, there are usually lots of yachts anchored in the bay and large boats carrying lots of tourists pull up to the sand. There are quieter beaches that you can seek out such as Mylos; this picture-postcard spot requires a bit of a hike to reach but it’s more than worth the effort.
Away from the world-class coastline, Lefkada has a mountainous interior that’s scattered with waterfalls, wineries and traditional villages that are seemingly frozen in time. There are also medieval ruins, hidden-away monasteries and historic churches. The waterfalls of Nydri – also known as the Dimossari Waterfalls – are a real island highlight and another place to take a dip if you ever tire of the Mediterranean. Water tumbles down the side of a 15-metre high gorge into a sheltered pool below. Some of our favourite inland villages to explore include Eglouvi with its shaded square and rural surroundings dotted with pretty churches, and Vafkeri where olive trees grow and there are far-reaching sea views.
Aktion Airport is located on the southern side of the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf, just a short distance from the town and about half an hour’s drive from the north-eastern tip of Lefkada.
