Sultan of Brunei’s flying palace

As the ruler of oil-rich Brunei on the island of Borneo, Hassanal Bolkiah ibni Omar Ali Saifuddien III is one of the world’s richest monarchs – and has the private jets to match.

The Sultan has several aircraft at his disposal, the largest of which is a Boeing 747-430 complete with lounge, business centre, master bedroom and luxury bathroom. The plane reportedly cost around $100 million to buy and another $120 million to deck out with an interior fit for royalty, which features Lalique crystal adornments and even a gold-plated sink.

Nike’s specialist sports jet

Although it’s yet to be incorporated into a working aircraft, design firm Teague and sports giant Nike’s collaboration on an interior jet design is one of the most creative ever produced.

Named ‘Home Advantage at 40,000 Feet’, this athlete-centric facility in the sky reimagines a plane’s cabin into four spaces dedicated to recovery, circulation, sleep and meditation. High-tech innovations include adjustable pods that monitor players' vitals and can be used in conjunction with ice and compression sleeves, a special kitchen for preparing nutritional meals, massage beds with biometric testing and an onboard computer that analyses stats via sensors in players’ footwear and clothing.

Embraer’s travel-inspired interiors

When Embraer launched its 1000E private jet in early 2017, owners were given five interior design concepts for inspiration. Some of the schemes take their cues from glamorous destinations like Kyoto, Manhattan and Hollywood, while the others are inspired by classic yachts and traditional American ranches.

Styled like a classic gentleman’s club, “Manhattan” features a metal mural of the New York borough inspired by the one in the Empire State Building, while “Hollywood” captures the neighbourhood’s glamourous golden age with backlit crystal sculptures, Art Deco-style windows, metallic upholstery and marble finishes. “Kyoto”, meanwhile, incorporates cutting-edge technology and a minimalist design into an airy cabin flooded with natural light.

U.S. President’s Air Force One

As the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden enjoys the use of two identical Boeing 747-200Bs dubbed Air Force One. With space for 70 passengers and 26 crew-members, including President Biden’s staff, each 70-metre-long jet boasts a private bedroom and bathroom, gym, office and even a medical suite with an operating room.

Used by US presidents for more than 25 years, these famous aircraft are heavily customised for maximum security with features like electromagnetic pulses and secure communication channels. They’re soon to be replaced by two Boeing 747-8is at an estimated cost of $5.3 billion, with rumours abounding that the upgraded fleet will be missing a few of these key security features despite the massive price tag.

HNA Group’s luxury home in the sky

In 2016, Chinese conglomerate HNA Group bought the first private Boeing Dreamliner and set about turning it into a 2,400-square-foot luxury home in the sky.

Designed by Kestrel Aviation Management, the aircraft’s custom-made interior took more than two years to complete and has five bathrooms, a lounge, a meeting area and a guest cabin with 18 first-class sleeper seats. There’s also a sound-proofed master suite with king-sized bed, walk-in wardrobe, dressing room and en-suite bathroom with double shower and marble heated floors.

Billionaire prince’s jumbo jet

Billionaire businessman Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal is a member of the Saudi royal family, so it’s no surprise he owns one of the world’s most luxurious private planes.

Originally configured to seat over 400 passengers, the Boeing 747 has been customised to include two luxurious bedrooms and a dining table for 14 (yes, 14!) people. The interior is opulently adorned with white and gold furnishings and there’s even a golden throne in the middle of the plane where the prince can sit whilst in the air.

Airbus’ convertible car with wings

Airbus Corporate Jets and luxury car company Pagani Automobili wanted to create a convertible car with wings when they collaborated on a new design for the ACJ319neo, called the Infinito cabin. Launched in 2017, the innovative design features a screened ceiling that gives the illusion of being in a roofless jet by projecting live images of the sky above.

Curves inspired by nature formed a pathway through the cabin and featured in the shell-shaped valances and walls between zones – including one between lounge and conference areas, which switched from opaque to transparent at the touch of a button.
